HISTORY OF THE MILLAY CLUB ALUMNI ASSOCIATION

The Alumni Association of Southeast Catholic High School was formed in the fall of 1937. In 1942, the association
changed its name to The Millay Club in memory of Rev. William J. Millay, O Praem., who taught at Southeast Catholic
High School. The annual Alumni Carnival was instituted in 1952 for the benefit of the Norbertine Seminary. The
Norbertine order provided the majority of the faculty for the school in the early years.
In 1956, the opening of Bishop Neumann High School at 26th & Moore Streets prompted The Millay Club to be subtitled “The Southeast Catholic, Bishop Neumann High School Alumni Association.”
Another major change took place for the Millay Club in August 1978. Following the canonization of St. John Neumann in 1977, John Cardinal Krol renamed the school as St. John Neumann High School. From that point in time, The Millay Club was known as the Alumni Association for Southeast Catholic, Bishop Neumann and St. John Neumann High School.
In 2004, St. John Neumann High School and St. Maria Goretti High School were consolidated in the Goretti facility
located at 1736 S. 10th Street, Philadelphia PA and renamed Ss. John Neumann and Maria Goretti Catholic High School.
The administration of the new school asked The Millay Club to serve as their Alumni Association. The Millay Club
established an office in the school and began to assist in raising funds for Ss. John Neumann and Maria Goretti Catholic High School for tuition assistance for students who want to attend the school.
Preserving the history and tradition of our beloved schools while working more effectively to insure the future of the
new school became paramount. The Alumnae Association of St. Maria Goretti High School and The Millay Club agreed
that their separate efforts on behalf of the school would be more effective if they were consolidated.
In 2010, that action became official and The Millay Club’s official name changed to “The Millay Club Alumni Association
of Southeast Catholic - Bishop Neumann - St. John Neumann- St. Maria Goretti - Ss. John Neumann and Maria
Goretti Catholic High School.”
